Reflectarrays are innovative, low profile structures useful as alternative to conventional reflector antennas in many application fields, such as remote sensing and satellite communications. Their design requires an appropriate phase distribution to be imposed on the array elements for obtaining field patterns with prescribed directions. The specific phase curve is computed in this paper by analysing the field scattered by an isolated reflectarray unit cell. Moment Method approach is integrated with Physical Optics solution for taking into account the presence of the finite ground plane. The effect of different incidence angles between feed and elements is also included in the analysis. A synthesis algorithm based on the iterative projection method is then adopted to design single and multi-beam reflectarrays. Finally, a novel topology based on a slot coupled microstrip patch is proposed as radiating element with improved bandwidth features.
