The Author describes the main features that have characterized the debate built up during the past decades in Anglo-Saxon musicology, regarding the nature of the discipline and the role of the scholar. Must the musicologist be a historian that scientifically catalogues and collects sources or must the musicologist be able to acquire knowledge and be able to interpret the musical fact and critically guide the listener? And, from a more general point of view, must the history in the making be "evolutionary" and research the answers and explanations regarding a certain piece or style, or must it concentrate more on singular events and on how the related music "works" and how it was contextualized in its time and how it is in ours? After introducing some of the protagonists in this debate – such as Kerman, Cone, Treitler and Jander – the Author describes a few new themes of the musicological study: temporality, gender studies, deconstructivism and the relation between analysis and narrative.
