In the new, post-1990s Central American cultural scenario, the definitions of “identity” and “subjectivity” have undergone some interesting changes, which I propose to analyse, on a literary level, through the theme of metamorphosis. With its focus on the body and its potentialities, metamorphosis may be read as a grotesque, fantastic, dramatic, representation of the attempt to transgress superimposed modes of subjectivation, by suggesting rhyzomatic and de-centred relations, which allow the individual to set oneself at the margins, and in so doing, to create border identities. As a result, the transformation of the body is associated both to power – and therefore to politics - , and to the intimate dimension of the self, who is the constant object of his/her own (re)creation. The purpose of this study is to analyse the theme of metamorphosis in some recent central-American texts, in comparison with some texts of the XXth century, using as tools literary criticism and the theoretical perspectives of Butler, Foucault and Deleuze.
