The article reviews Giovanni Sartori's contribution by focusing on types of party system and the concept of political change through a comparison area (Southern Europe). Starting from the 1976 article by Sartori the second paragraph deals with the political change occured in the party systems by definingdifferent dimensions and main features in the XXI century competitive party systems. The third paragraph analyzes in depht the Sartori types of party systems and highlights the classification criteria, the main dimensions, the different types and their empirical validity after turning fifty years from the original draft (1965). Finally, the fourth applies the Sartori model to assess the change of party systems in Southern Europe after the 2008 economic crisis. The article takes into account different dimensions of change or dependent variables (voter turnout, volatility, fragmentation, polarization, patterns of government) over the last twenty years in order to distinguish between structural and cyclical changes. Overall it emerges the ongoing relevance in the contribution of Giovanni Sartori.
