My essay is dedicated to the conception of democracy of Samuel Alexander, which is crucial, in a comparative key, for the understanding of the strong and often unexplored connections between politics, evolution, ethics and philosophy. It is also important from the historical point of view, for the contribution it provides for the reconstruction of the European cultural context at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth century’s. The theory of universalization of the democratic principle, formulated by Alexander in the same period of the explosion of socialist ideology, from which he remains independent, is predictive of some of the most important liberal and democratic conceptions of the twentieth century, including those of John Dewey and Norberto Bobbio.
