Forme della memoria. Attorno a qualche storia di Conrad

The essay is focussed on three short novels by Joseph Conrad: The Secret Sharer, Heart of Darkness and The Shadow Line, all of them featuring a relationship between the present and the past. The comment of these writings leads to the identification of different shapes of memory: the memory acting as a tool to find orientation across time, the memory demanding new interpretations of the past, and the “memory of the future”, that is the memory of the horizons of expectations we have considered in the past. The latter is specifically important: any definition of our identity includes questions and assertions on the futures which we have once expected; the comparison between the latter and the accomplished futures encompasses the negotiation with our personal history, that corresponds to the deepest meaning of the autobiographic discourse.

Il saggio ruota attorno a tre storie brevi di Joseph Conrad: Il compagno segreto, Cuore di tenebra e La linea d’ombra. Tutte e tre mettono in scena una relazione fra un presente ed un passato. Il loro commento porta a identificare diverse forme di memoria: la memoria che si presta come strumento di orientamento nel tempo, la memoria che domanda nuove interpretazioni del passato, e la “memoria del futuro”, cioè la memoria degli orizzonti di attesa che abbiamo contemplato in passato. Quest’ultima è una memoria particolarmente importante: ogni definizione della nostra identità comprende domande e affermazioni riguardo ai futuri che abbiamo atteso in passato, ed è nel confronto fra questi e quelli realizzati che consiste quel lavoro di conciliazione con la nostra storia che corrisponde al senso più profondo del discorso autobiografico.
