Abstract

The depopulation of rural areas is not only a problemaffecting the European countries that suffer it, but also a socialproblem for each of us: it implies the loss of cultural and identityvalues, and produces serious territorial imbalances andenvironmental risks (biodiversity loss, etc.) where sustainabilityplays a major role. In this context, the study of demographicbehaviors related to the arrival of new populations becomes soimportant. In this work, three categories of new rural populationsthese being independent from the permanent population will betaken into consideration: Rural Users, Nomadic and NewInhabitants. In Europe, due to a variety of reasons, the number oflocalities/towns that organize themselves to accommodate these newways of population is steadily growing. However, the diversity ofsocial-demographic and cultural contexts makes it difficult for theavailability of a reference unitarian political framework regardingthe reception of these new populations of rural areas. In the present study, aside from facing the issue of new populationsin rural areas from a conceptual viewpoint, some cases pertaining tothe assimilation of new populations within rural areas of Spain, France and Ireland will be shown
