Retentionoftoxicdyeswithmolecularweightslowerthanthemolecularweightcut-off(MWCO)ofthe ultrafiltration membranescanbeimprovedthroughselectivebindingofthetargetdyestoawater-so- luble polymer,followedbyultrafiltration ofthemacromolecularcomplexesformed.Thismethod,often referredtoaspolymerenhancedultrafiltration (PEUF),wasinvestigatedinthepresentstudy,using polyethyleneimine(PEI)asthechelatingagent.ModelazodyeReactiveRed120wasselectedasthe poorlybiodegradable,targetcontaminant,becauseofitsfrequentrecalcitrantpresenceincoloredef- fluents, anditseventualecotoxicologicalimpactsontheenvironment.Theeffectsofthegoverning process factors,namely,cross flow rate,transmembranepressurepolymertodyeratioandpH,ontarget dyerejectionefficiency weremeticulouslyexamined.Additionally,eachparameterlevelwasstatistically optimized usingcentralcompositedesign(CCD)fromtheresponsesurfacemethodology(RSM)toolkit, with anobjectivetomaximizeperformanceefficiency.Theresultsrevealedhighdyeretentionefficiency over99%,accompaniedwithreasonablepermeate flux over100L/m2 h underoptimalprocesscondi- tions. Theestimatedresultswereelucidatedgraphicallythroughresponsesurface(RS)plotsandvali- dated experimentally.TheanalysesclearlyestablishedPEUFasanovel,reasonablyefficient andeco- nomical routeforrecalcitrantdyetreatment.
