Per Cicerone le virtutes sono l’essenza dell’individuo e dell’intera comunità e Roma appunto doveva liberarsi dai malcostumi e vizi, per mettere in luce i vantaggi che solo le virtù arrecavano. Virtù che devono camminare di pari passi all’individuo che pur dimenandosi per vie ardue devono accogliere anche quegli aspetti apparentemente fuorvianti ma che fanno parte della crescita della persona.
