A brief overview of photocatalytic membrane reactors (PMRs) utilizing pressure-driven membrane techniques such as microfiltration, ultrafiltration, and nanofiltration is presented and discussed. Possible strategies of mitigation of membrane fouling in PMRs, including backwashing, air sparging, intermittent permeation, control of hydraulic conditions, etc., are explained in detail. The problem of membrane stability in PMRs in terms of their resistance to UV irradiation, action of reactive oxygen species, and abrasion by photocatalyst particles is explicated. Moreover, an overview of factors affecting the permeate quality is presented. Finally, examples of various configurations of PMRs, including pressurized PMR and submerged PMR systems with photocatalyst in a slurry or photocatalytic membranes are described and compared.
