This article, Translation and Modulation, or The «Experience of the Foreign». Simenon in Italy, briefly describes the translation techniques used by three Italian translators of Simenon’s Mon ami Maigret (My Friend Maigret - 1949). The texts studied, published for the first time in 1955 (Felice Dessì), 1990 (Eileen Romano) and 1999 (Franco Salvatorelli), show different approaches. We analyse them in order to highlight some specific key words, linguistic characteristics and rhetorical figures. As a result, this article's conclusion calls for a comparatism that seeks an answer to the question who translates what and how in the conceptual domain.
