After bringing back the notion of morpheme in line with Baudouin de Courtenay’s original definition – interpreting it as a linguistic form of the expression plane associated with a constant meaning which one must be able to segment at the phonetic-phonological string level – the present work introduces, alongside the already existing morphophoneme, the new terms allomorphophoneme and allomorphophone to indicate, in that order, the distinctive phonemic segment of the alternating forms of the same morpheme and the segment which determines the change of a morpheme's phonetic form on morphophonological bases.

Abstract

After bringing back the notion of morpheme in line with Baudouin de Courtenay’s original definition – interpreting it as a linguistic form of the expression plane associated with a constant meaning which one must be able to segment at the phonetic-phonological string level – the present work introduces, alongside the already existing morphophoneme, the new terms allomorphophoneme and allomorphophone to indicate, in that order, the distinctive phonemic segment of the alternating forms of the same morpheme and the segment which determines the change of a morpheme's phonetic form on morphophonological bases.
