The contribution is a study about the mental representations of the places of the Risorgimento memory in Calabria (Southern Italy), which aims to analyze the development of perceptive capacities of primary school children through a training course carried out during the 2012-2013 school year in three provincial capitals: Cosenza, Catanzaro and Crotone. The presence of the so-called factors identified by the French geographer Antoine Bailly (1985) is evaluated, which, as «perceptual filter», make the territory perceived different from subject to subject. The authors considered useful to dwell on the educational activities and the direct observation of the places of the Risorgimento memory in the urban space of Crotone. The contribution, in the second part, focuses on the learning aspects related to the use of mental cartography, analyzing in particular its potential within geography teaching. Finally, the mental maps, elaborated by the children were classified on the basis of the different levels of cognitive mapping identified by Downs and Stea (1973).
