Decades have passed since the first research efforts on the approximate solution of closed queueing networks models under non-exponential services and non-pure random mechanisms in customer processing and routing. The suitability of modeling choices and solution approaches consolidated in other domains are examined in this paper with respect to two key logistic processes in container terminals: the vessel arrival-departure process and the internal container transfer process. Numerical experience for the two queueing models related to the above logistic processes provides some guidelines on future research efforts and/or how to adapt the large body of techniques and algorithms available nowadays to container terminal logistics.

Abstract

Decades have passed since the first research efforts on the approximate solution of closed queueing networks models under non-exponential services and non-pure random mechanisms in customer processing and routing. The suitability of modeling choices and solution approaches consolidated in other domains are examined in this paper with respect to two key logistic processes in container terminals: the vessel arrival-departure process and the internal container transfer process. Numerical experience for the two queueing models related to the above logistic processes provides some guidelines on future research efforts and/or how to adapt the large body of techniques and algorithms available nowadays to container terminal logistics.
