Abstract

The Anthropomorphic Couples as Pendants · Among the bronze jewelry productions of southern Italy and Sicily in the early Iron Age, stand out, due to their symbolic-religious and social connotations, the pendants depicting a couple of naked male and female in the act of embracing, that recall peculiar symbolic interpretations connected to the natural force of reproduction. They are necklace pendants worn by women of high social class and widespread – not only in the funerary sphere – especially on the Ionian side of Calabria and Sicily. They’re also present, with two specimens, in northern Italy and central Europe.
