Dionysius Chalcus’s poetry, one of the most important representatives of the sympotic elegy in the classic age, truly witnesses a literary season characterized by linguistic and stylistic search, anticipating expressive renewal destined to blossom in the following centuries. The use of a strongly allusive and metaphoric lexis and the particular attention to phonetic and prosodic phenomena as well as the metric elaboration of his writings, lead us assuming that Dionysius’s poetry has been influenced by the ‘New Music’.
