The sources on the historian Cephisodorus (FGrHist 112 = BNJ 112) are few and conflicting. The two fragments that have survived mention him as the author of a historical writing on the Sacred War (F 1) and, as Cephisodorus of Thebes, of a work in which he recalls Antipater’s incorrupt life (F 2). This paper seeks to assume that F 1 and F 2 refer to the Athenian Cephisodorus, who, according to other sources, was a rhetorician and a disciple of Isocrates.

Abstract

The sources on the historian Cephisodorus (FGrHist 112 = BNJ 112) are few and conflicting. The two fragments that have survived mention him as the author of a historical writing on the Sacred War (F 1) and, as Cephisodorus of Thebes, of a work in which he recalls Antipater’s incorrupt life (F 2). This paper seeks to assume that F 1 and F 2 refer to the Athenian Cephisodorus, who, according to other sources, was a rhetorician and a disciple of Isocrates.
