Abstract

The existence of language has been rightly considered the fact that it makes specific humans compared to other non-human animals. This idea contributed to a ingrained prejudice against the deaf and produced discrimination. In fact, the «audism» runs through the history of deafness for a long time. A significant exception is the work of Charles-Michel L’Épée. In the 18th century he founded the first school for the deaf and "made" the first sign language in history. The deaf body is finally defined and recognized not as a stranger, but as an integral part of the linguistic and metalinguistic history of humanity.
