The article discusses the concept of public sphere, as it has been offered by Habermas, and focuses on the role of cafés and similar places in forming the public sphere in the early phases of modernity. While discussing history and social functions of cafés and similar places, the article proposes a new insight on the very concept of public sphere, and it ends with a new appraisal of the role which cafés play in contemporary societies.
