The essay proposes a typology of rural economies for developed countries on the basis of the current literature reviewed. The purpose is to offer a knowledge background to implement economic policies in rural areas of industrialized countries. The main hypothesis states that an increasingly differentiated regionalization of rural space is taking place. Within such a process 3 types of rural economies have been identified: 1) rent-seeking economies, that deliver raw materials and commodities to metropolitan areas; 2) dependent economies, where factories are increasingly located because of their low cost of labor; and 3) entrepreneurial economies, where entrepreneurial skills are associated with a preserved, rural environment that provides a better quality of life and an escape route for stressed metropolitan newcomers.

Abstract
The essay proposes a typology of rural economies for developed countries on the basis of the current literature reviewed. The purpose is to offer a knowledge background to implement economic policies in rural areas of industrialized countries. The main hypothesis states that an increasingly differentiated regionalization of rural space is taking place. Within such a process 3 types of rural economies have been identified: 1) rent-seeking economies, that deliver raw materials and commodities to metropolitan areas; 2) dependent economies, where factories are increasingly located because of their low cost of labor; and 3) entrepreneurial economies, where entrepreneurial skills are associated with a preserved, rural environment that provides a better quality of life and an escape route for stressed metropolitan newcomers.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
