The article focuses on the use of pronominal strategies bydescendants of Italian emigrants as encoding means of identity. Althoughthere are several ways through which speakers can show their attitudes andstances with respect to their identity, the study of pronominal strategieshas a long-standing tradition. In this paper, two main research questionswill be focused on:1. Which kind of strategies linked to the use of pronouns emerges inthe speech of Italian emigrants?2. What role do personal pronouns play in the process of identityconstruction for different generations of emigrants?To these ends, we will briefly introduce the Italian pronoun system, thenwe will clarify what we mean by identity, and in what ways the migrationcontext is relevant to research on language and identity.
