This paper aims at analysing the names of Canadian companies that include the lexeme green, and at assessing whether such term has the semantic property referring to the environment-friendly qualities that has been recently introduced in the English vocabulary. The term green is to be intended here as designed to protect the environment or to limit damage to the environment. This article will try to answer the following questions: does a trade name with green in it identify eco-friendly companies? What kind of syntactic and semantic behaviour does such lexeme have? Are such names truly ‘green trade names’?

Abstract

This paper aims at analysing the names of Canadian companies that include the lexeme green, and at assessing whether such term has the semantic property referring to the environment-friendly qualities that has been recently introduced in the English vocabulary. The term green is to be intended here as designed to protect the environment or to limit damage to the environment. This article will try to answer the following questions: does a trade name with green in it identify eco-friendly companies? What kind of syntactic and semantic behaviour does such lexeme have? Are such names truly ‘green trade names’?
