Alpine nature protection through natural parks has always been reputed necessary to save the magnificent and precious mountain environments but very difficult because of the dense human settlement. Nonetheless a quarter of the Alps’ surface is nowadays occupied by parks. The article retraces the origins and the development of Italian natural parks of the Alps from the first proposals to the general law on protected areas of 1991.
