The military orders and the local population in Italy

The paper aims to focus on the theme of the “movement” and its implications in the Hospitallers’ economic life, with particular reference to Italy between the fourteenth and the first half of the sixteenth century. They will be mainly used sources of the National Library of Malta (Archive of the Order of Malta), belonging to the langue of Italy, administrative documents, or referring to the chanceries of the Masters. The movements of Masters and knights, of their men, of their ships, with goods will be analyzed as a means to increase the wealth and property of the Order. In partucular I will focus on: 1) The travels of the Masters who were also aim to protect the property of the Order (I remember, for example, Folques de Villaret, Robert de Juilly; the “anti-master” Caracciolo etc.) 2) Trips of ships and cargo, routes, methods of execution, type of documents that have been handed down the memory of those trips.
