Curves represent a rich field of study which remains partly unexplored, and that can be discovered and rediscovered at various levels by school-age children also with the aid of mathematical machines, in a process, which falls between tradition and modernity. In this work we present -in a problem solving context- a learning experience centred on the deltoid curve generation and aimed at understanding the concrete-abstract relationship, without confining mathematical concepts to a purely theoretical aspect. The path starts with an empirical approach that uses a Spirograph and then gradually achieves the graphic construction of the curve, by carrying out simple algorithms implemented in the programming environment MatCos. The algorithms are based on the use/exploitation of different semiotic registers in order to facilitate a smooth modelling process.
