This paper describes how the grounder of the ASP system DLV handles programs with function symbols, briefly illustrating two different strategies alongside the results of a preliminary experimental activity. The grounder is able to deal with ASP programs making an unrestricted use of function symbols, and it can perform an on-demand check in order to ensure that the input falls into the class of argument-restricted programs, thus guaranteeing the termination.
