This paper describes how the grounder of the ASP system DLV handles programs with function symbols, briefly illustrating two different strategies alongside the results of a preliminary experimental activity. The grounder is able to deal with ASP programs making an unrestricted use of function symbols, and it can perform an on-demand check in order to ensure that the input falls into the class of argument-restricted programs, thus guaranteeing the termination.

Abstract

This paper describes how the grounder of the ASP system DLV handles programs with function symbols, briefly illustrating two different strategies alongside the results of a preliminary experimental activity. The grounder is able to deal with ASP programs making an unrestricted use of function symbols, and it can perform an on-demand check in order to ensure that the input falls into the class of argument-restricted programs, thus guaranteeing the termination.
