There is large R&D activity on the use of lignocellulosic sources, particularly waste biomass, for producing biofuels, but the selection of the suitable routes for 2nd generation biodiesel is still under large debate, as well as the development of full chemocatalytic biorefineries approaches to reduce the environmental impact of bio-routes (particularly on water) and intensify the processes as well. This poses also constrains in the selection of the suitable chemo-catalytic approaches. We discuss here some attempt to go in this direction and particularly the use of solid catalysts in an environmentally-friendly approach to deconstruct cellulose and the catalytic conversion of the furfural products such as 2-HMF to biodiesel components by etherification with bioethanol.
