Our research investigates the relationship between institutional context, environmental quality and degree of economic development by analysing the existence of long-term cointegration between three variables: rule of law, carbon dioxide emissions and income. In particular, the model offers an analysis of endogeneity and direction of causality between these variables by applying experimental VAR software for panel data of 138 countries from 1996 to 2008. Preliminary results show that reinforcement of institutions leads to a win–win situation, where pollution decreases together with improved economic development of countries.

Abstract
Our research investigates the relationship between institutional context, environmental quality and degree of economic development by analysing the existence of long-term cointegration between three variables: rule of law, carbon dioxide emissions and income. In particular, the model offers an analysis of endogeneity and direction of causality between these variables by applying experimental VAR software for panel data of 138 countries from 1996 to 2008. Preliminary results show that reinforcement of institutions leads to a win–win situation, where pollution decreases together with improved economic development of countries.File in questo prodotto:
