The notion of intelligent design has its origins in early 19th Century British philosophy, William Paley's "Natural Theology" (1802), which this paper takes as a starting point in order to move to the Scopes Monkey Trial in Dayton, Tennessee in 1925, to more recent instances of the notion, especially the Dover Pennsylvania School Board case of 2005. Central to the concerns of the paper are the institutional conflicts involved in the teaching of the evolutionary sciences in the U.S. schoolroom, from the end of the 19th century to the present day.

Abstract
The notion of intelligent design has its origins in early 19th Century British philosophy, William Paley's "Natural Theology" (1802), which this paper takes as a starting point in order to move to the Scopes Monkey Trial in Dayton, Tennessee in 1925, to more recent instances of the notion, especially the Dover Pennsylvania School Board case of 2005. Central to the concerns of the paper are the institutional conflicts involved in the teaching of the evolutionary sciences in the U.S. schoolroom, from the end of the 19th century to the present day.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
