This paper deals with the notion of reason presented in Washington Irving's short story, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" (1819) and in Tim Burton's cinematic adaptation of that tale, in "Sleepy Hollow" (1999), in which the cinematic version avails itself of a parodic rendition of 18th Century notions of Reason, such that the proto-positivist faith in objective reason present in Irving gives way to a Modernist and Post-Modernist critique of Reason based on psychoanalytic modes of thought.

Abstract
This paper deals with the notion of reason presented in Washington Irving's short story, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" (1819) and in Tim Burton's cinematic adaptation of that tale, in "Sleepy Hollow" (1999), in which the cinematic version avails itself of a parodic rendition of 18th Century notions of Reason, such that the proto-positivist faith in objective reason present in Irving gives way to a Modernist and Post-Modernist critique of Reason based on psychoanalytic modes of thought.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
