This article presents an analysis of artifacts from Iron-Age necropolis from Calabria whose decoration or other characteristics suggest religious connotations. Such objects, which include statuettes, pendants, scarabs, decorated ornaments, vases, and weapons, constitute slight but very important traces of pre-Roman religious ideology. In particular, the data examined here suggest that female roles were of primary importance in the transmission of symbolic content. This is in contrast to male roles, which are characterized by a strong conservatism and are less clearly demarcated symbolically. Additionally, the analysis presented here highlights the fundamental importance of contacts with the Mediterranean world and the Cypriot sphere in particular in the development of the religious ideology of the native communities of Calabria
