De Sanctis A, The space as material of the ancient city, pp. 11-36, in “The urban space as theme”, (edited by Aldo De Sanctis), Roma Gangemi Editore, 2004. Abstract: the volume contains three chapters of the author and it’s the result of a research (financed with founds “ex 60%”) which shows how the free space of streets and squares is, by itself, a proper material of the city; a material that is organic to the buildings and that leads to the architectural solutions of buildings themselves. In the chapter proposed, the free area of streets and squares is considered not as an excess, or a residual surface between buildings, but as a product of compositional solutions able to reconcile responses both of functional and architectonic type and, in particular, responses useful for the project of conservation, valorization and recovery.
