The article concerns the theories of modernity, mainly focussing on the S. N. Eisenstadt’s notion of “multiple modernities”. It discusses virtues and limits of such a notion in front of some other approaches (postmodern thought, world-system theories, postcolonial studies). The article is at the core of recent interests of the author, concerning a critical re-examination of central ideas of the current social theory in the light of the processes of globalization.
Il saggio affronta la questione della modernità discutendo in particolare i pregi e i limiti della nozione di “modernità multiple” proposta da S. N. Eisenstadt nell’ultimo scorcio del XX secolo. Tale nozione è discussa sullo sfondo delle teorie offerte dal pensiero postmoderno, dall’approccio del sistema-mondo e dai postcolonial studies. Il saggio è al centro delle riflessioni proposte dall’autore in questi anni, relative alla revisione critica dei concetti principali delle scienze sociali alla luce dei nuovi problemi e delle nuove conoscenze aperti dai processi di globalizzazione.
