Abstract

The architectural survey organizes the research path results within a structure, more or less complex, which aggregates different information types (drawings, historical notes, iconographic and photographic documents, diagnostic investigations, ...), with the aim of creating a system of knowledge to understand and analyze the investigated object. The interpretive method proceeds according to a triadic scheme, in which the surveyor, the architectural structure and its architectural representation interact in a cyclical “self-correcting” dialogue, with a constant refinement of informations deduced from the object and its representation. This system allows, on the one hand, to going deeper the knowledge of the historical building through consecutive modifications and clarifications, on the other hand to improve the examination and interpretation skills of the surveyor itself. Within this framework, the architectural representation is a “creative context”, which acts as an active “tool” in analysis of the historical building under investigation, stimulating the thought formation. Having said that, will be applied to the case study of the ancient limekiln changed into a chapel, built probably in 15th century, perhaps in the presence of St. Francis, who wanted in his native Paola the first evidence of the Order of Minims by himself founded. The survey was conducted with optical 3D measurement techniques (laser scanner and photogrammetry) whose results will be opportunity to test new strategies to “read” and analyze a monument until today ignored and that instead deserves an appropriate attention for recovery and for its valorization.
