The present paper describes some basic characteristics of the welfare services provided in ten countries located across five continents, namely Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa (the so- called BRICS countries), Portugal, Spain, Italy, Turkey and the UK. For each of these countries, the main data analysed consist of general development and population data, and of information on available welfare services and on the actors who are responsible for their management and operation.
