The aim of this contribution is to give a detailed survey, as much as possible exhaustive, of the available studies regarding the intriguing problem of orientational ordering of small solutes in nematic mesophases. It is the intention of the authors that the interested reader should be able to gather quite complete information about the approach to the matter and its historical evolution to date. Finally, exactly 50 years after the seminal paper of Saupe and Englert, where the phenomenon was observed for the first time (A. Saupe and G. Englert, Phys. Rev. Lett., 1963, 11, 462), this is also intended as a tribute to all the outstanding scientists who have devoted (and still devote, every day) their intelligences and capacities to trying to understand and explain this important and fascinating topic.

Abstract
The aim of this contribution is to give a detailed survey, as much as possible exhaustive, of the available studies regarding the intriguing problem of orientational ordering of small solutes in nematic mesophases. It is the intention of the authors that the interested reader should be able to gather quite complete information about the approach to the matter and its historical evolution to date. Finally, exactly 50 years after the seminal paper of Saupe and Englert, where the phenomenon was observed for the first time (A. Saupe and G. Englert, Phys. Rev. Lett., 1963, 11, 462), this is also intended as a tribute to all the outstanding scientists who have devoted (and still devote, every day) their intelligences and capacities to trying to understand and explain this important and fascinating topic.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
