The essay investigates the links between music and plays in the second half of the XVI Century, Vecchi’s twofold activities as musician and playwright, and the contamination of music and theatre that gave rise to the Commedia Armonica. Special emphasis is given to the link between Vecchi’s work and that of other protagonists of the Renaissance performances in the German-Italian world. The thesis of the essay is that the late XVI century performative arts were characterised by a substantial hybridization of codes and genres that gave rise to a full grown theatrical art, which was less differentiated than the contemporary literary theories believed.
