The aim of the paper is to investigate the role of institutional environment on economic performance in a microeconomic framework. The model captures the interaction between the state and the production sector, introducing an institutional parameter. The results suggest that rent-seeking can play a crucial role in allocating resources optimally in a weak institutional environment, such as in countries involved in transition processes.
