The distributed application of the well-known USLE by Wischmeier and Smith to the catchment of the Fiumara Armaconi (Calabria, Italy) showed that the mean annual sediment yield during the last few years was about 1 mm/year. The influence that the large number of check-dams in the watershed exert on shorelines is pointed out. The use of GIS permitted the rapid evaluation of topographic factors for each morphological unit, and remote-sensing techniques made it possible to obtain the NDVI map. A decreasing exponential relation between the USLE cropping-management factor and the NDVI is proposed, that will be more accurately defined, if direct soil loss measurements are available. An aerophotogrammetric technique for the study of morphological variations in the downstream end of the Armaconi is being tested. For this reach a high resolution DEM was prepared, that will be used as a reference for evaluating its future evolutions.
