Digital Libraries have undergone a considerable evolution, becoming complex entities, able of managing and preserving different types of material. They offer a variety of services which can be pervasive and ubiquitous and can be heterogeneous in characteristics, objectives and functions. Since the 1990s, librarians first and researchers belonging to different fields later, have elaborated different theories and applications and for this reason the definition of digital library presents a polysemy of meanings that reflect different visions and approaches. In a few years, the concept of digital libraries has evolved going from a system for the retrieval of static information (primarily books and digitalized textual documents) to a tool useful for the collaboration and interaction between researchers and users, regarding domain specific topics. In this interaction, digital libraries deal with and process collections of distributed digital and multimedia objects, and also data coming from sensors, mobile devices or distributed computing. In this new vision metadata plays an increasingly central and decisive role in DLs. The purpose of the book is to present, according to the standards and best practices developed in the last few years, an original and integrated metadata model useful in the management and monitoring of the digital object life cycle, with the aim of optimizing qualitative services associated with access to and preservation of digital objects.

Abstract
The purpose of the book is to present, according to the standards and best practices developed in the last few years, an original and integrated metadata model useful in the management and monitoring of the digital object life cycle, with the aim of optimizing qualitative services associated with access to and preservation of digital objects.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
