A new numerical approach to a two-dimensional transient free surface groundwater flow problem in saturated soil is presented. The solution is obtained using a special technique made up by coupling finite (FEM) and boundary (BEM) element methods in such a way as to exploit the advantages of both approaches. Although the proposed approach gives rise to a non-symmetrical matrix, less easily handling than the finite element symmetrical one, it can be possible to reduce computational effort using appropriate algorithms. The performance of the numerical procedure is tested via some simple problems.

Abstract
A new numerical approach to a two-dimensional transient free surface groundwater flow problem in saturated soil is presented. The solution is obtained using a special technique made up by coupling finite (FEM) and boundary (BEM) element methods in such a way as to exploit the advantages of both approaches. Although the proposed approach gives rise to a non-symmetrical matrix, less easily handling than the finite element symmetrical one, it can be possible to reduce computational effort using appropriate algorithms. The performance of the numerical procedure is tested via some simple problems.File in questo prodotto:
