Mediterranean diet health benefits have been partially attributed to the dietary consumption of extra virgin olive oil. Most recent interest has focused on the biologically active phenolic compounds naturally present in extra virgin olive oil. Extra virgin olive oil from Campania (Italy) was investigated for its phenolic profile, inhibitory activity against -glucosidase and -amilase, as well as angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE), which has been linked to hyperglycemia-associated hypertension. The HPLC analysis revealed the presence of 3,4-DHPEA, p-HPEA, 3,4-DHPEA-ADE and p-HPEA-EDA. Apigenin and luteolin were also identified. Phenolic extract showed IC50 values of 184 and 258 μg/mL, against -glucosidase and-amylase, respectively. Interesting was also the ACE inhibitory activity (IC50 98.6 μg/mL). The phenolic extract hypoglycaemic and ACE inhibitory activities showed in the present work provide a strong biochemical rationale for further in vivo studies. Actually, daily consumption of extra virgin olive oil has not been shown to provide clinical benefits to people with diabetes and hypertension but a possible preventive effect among high consumption of extra virgin olive oil cannot be ruled out, especially in terms of diet linked chemoprevention.
