The paper explores reasons and critical factors of the back-reshoring strategies (defined as voluntary corporate strategies to partially or totally relocate the industrial processes to its home country) and, based on theoretical framework and case studies, assesses the strategic impact on business management. To this end, in the absence of official statistics, the paper adopted an exploratory research methodology based on the limited international business literature available review and the secondary data analysis related to the two main geographic areas worldwide (US and Europe). In particular, it analyses the companies involved in the back-reshoring strategies, the abandoned host countries, the motivations of the relocation decisions. Using these sources, the paper achieves descriptive and exploratory results that are not exhaustive and conclusive but they are useful to represent the main features of the back-reshoring operations.Preliminary results suggest that back-reshoring strategies, supported by appropriate industrial policies, generate positive impacts both for the countries and for the firms but they have significant implications and costs for the organizations, as they require to manage strategic changes, replenish the knowledge and develop new skills and competencies. However, at the current state, the phenomenon is not yet sufficiently investigated despite the importance and diffusion in the world but it deserves to be deepened to drive the future development of the firms and delineate public policy directions that are comprehensive and not impromptu.A set of research proposals to be analysed in future research activity, on the basis of both, a literature review and preliminary evidence provided by this contribution complete the paper.

Abstract
However, at the current state, the phenomenon is not yet sufficiently investigated despite the importance and diffusion in the world but it deserves to be deepened to drive the future development of the firms and delineate public policy directions that are comprehensive and not impromptu.A set of research proposals to be analysed in future research activity, on the basis of both, a literature review and preliminary evidence provided by this contribution complete the paper.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
