The aim of the paper is to examine the potential of the AFN to build "sustainable local food systems" as resource to cope with the crisis. These processes will be analyzed by focusing on the role of producers engaged in peasant mode of production in creating networks for autonomy. Results of a research carried out in two Italian regions show that the use of a cooperative short chain is chosen and practiced for a different way of life.
