Ammiano geografo: la digressione sulla Persia (23,6)

It is dealt with the complex question of Ammianus’ geographical sources in the light of a commentary on the Persian digression. This extensive excursus in fact presents some of the thorniest aspects of the question: the use of Ptolemaeus’ Geography and the relationships of Ammianus with Solinus and Plinius. There are however also other interesting motives: the possible use of geographical maps; the recourse to Iustinus for the historical section; the questionable relationship with Herodotus in the ethnographical section; moreover, the difficult question of the relationships with Strabo and Eratosthenes and the use of Dio Cassius.

La complessa questione delle fonti geografiche ammianee viene affrontata alla luce di un commento alla digressione sulla Persia. Questo ampio excursus infatti presenta alcuni degli aspetti più spinosi della questione: l’utilizzo della Geografia di Tolemeo e i rapporti di Ammiano con Solino e Plinio. Non mancano tuttavia anche altri motivi degni di interesse: il possibile uso di carte geografiche; il ricorso a Giustino per la parte storica; il controverso rapporto con Erodoto per la sezione etnografica; ancora, la difficile questione dei rapporti con Strabone ed Eratostene e l’uso di Dione Cassio.
