Made probably by Byzantines in the IX century, in the ancient akropolis of Kroton, the castle of Charles V, it’s one of the ost important monuments of the Kroton's city. It was strategically located on top of the mountain of Capperina, in the ncient akropolis of Kroton, to defend the territory from foreign invasions. The massive building has a polygonal plant haracterized by the presence of four towers, two cylindrical constituted by megalithic curtain walls, cordoned, and two equally massive pentagonal, but more simply made, placed near of the corners of the complex. To study the castle has been drawn up a specific diagnostic plan aimed at rebuilding the digital "clinical" folder of the monument. It was therefore developed a survey composed of a pre-diagnosis step, dedicated to the analysis of the spatial and environmental ontext, in which the castle is placed. At this step follows the diagnosis, that consists in developing a more detailed study to reconstruct both the anamnestic framework of the monument, (accompanied by an architectural description and by a proper photographic dossier), both to outline the state of conservation of the castle, in relation to the constituent materials. To complete, the study also includes a deepening concerning the morphology (also to understand the texture) and the composition (elemental micro analysis), of the materials collected from the monument, through an advanced microscopic technique: the scanning electron microscopy (SEM with EDS probe). This instrument also allows the identification of the type of degradation, if present (of chemical, physical or biological type) to give important informations about the conservations's condition of the cultural object.
