COGNITIVE PROCESS APPLIED TO HISTORIC BUILDINGS CHARACTERIZED BY THE PRESENCE OF SINGULAR HOLLOW BRICKS

In the alleys of the old town centre of Crotone, in Calabria, there are old residences characterized by unique building structures. They have been realized using unusual handmade hollow bricks, probably realized using typical local clay. This kind of brick has one or two circular holes lengthwise arranged. The study reports the results of a specific investigation directed following a funded method. The investigation is oriented to characterize mortars and bricks taken away from one of these residences. Principal aim of the investigation has been the acquisition of informations useful to know and understand the course of the decline of mortars and bricks that constitute the artifact’s brickwork, to outline the diagnostic profile introductory to the settlement of appropriate interventions of restoration. Moreover it has been expounded a comparative survey to enhance the fact-finding profile taking into account informations about other kinds of clay elements used for building purposes in the area of Crotone.
