The aim of this work is to verify if in Schumann’s music, besides the functions usually assigned to the motivic quotation – inspiration, recollection, symbol and tribute – we can add also the structural one: the same function used by Beethoven in his symphonic style, raised by Hoffmann and by nineteenth-century compos- ers to main poetic model of Romanticism.
