This chapter aims at analyzing a selection of placenames in Nunavut on Google Maps and Apple Maps. Adopting a critical cartography approach that views maps as forms of discourse, the present chapter focuses on the official toponyms of twenty-six Inuit communities to assess whether their Indigenous names are retrievable and visible on these two digital map tools. This case study was inspired by the recent campaigns promoted by the Inuit to restore traditional names in the Inuktitut and Inuinnaqtun languages throughout the landspace of Nunavut in an attempt to gradually reclaim not only the geographical space of their ancestors, but also their identities.

Abstract
This chapter aims at analyzing a selection of placenames in Nunavut on Google Maps and Apple Maps. Adopting a critical cartography approach that views maps as forms of discourse, the present chapter focuses on the official toponyms of twenty-six Inuit communities to assess whether their Indigenous names are retrievable and visible on these two digital map tools. This case study was inspired by the recent campaigns promoted by the Inuit to restore traditional names in the Inuktitut and Inuinnaqtun languages throughout the landspace of Nunavut in an attempt to gradually reclaim not only the geographical space of their ancestors, but also their identities.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
