This chapter explores how between 1861 and 1914 soldiers-aimed spelling books and handbooks (libri del soldato) legitimized military service and persuaded conscripts to peacefully fulfill their military duty. In particular, the essay investigates to what extent pro-conscription stylistic and argumentative strategies changed according to national/international political framework and sociological profile of the rank and file.
